Description

Ukraine occupies a leading place on the map of the world avant-garde. After all, Kazimir Malevich, Vasyl Kandinsky, Oleksandr Arkhipenko, David Burlyuk, Oleksandr Bogomazov are artists who were born, studied or worked in Ukraine. They were closely connected with Ukrainian culture, traditions, natural landscapes and made a huge contribution to world culture.

The Russian Empire appropriated the works of these artists, calling them "Russian artists." So there is a lot of work ahead to return their names to Ukrainian culture. And also — to understand the phenomenon of the avant-garde in a historical perspective: to see how the seeds sown by the first avant-garde artists have germinated in Ukrainian and world culture until now.

The future Museum of the Avant-Garde, which is being formed today, almost before our eyes, took on such tasks. Our new edition of Antikvar magazine is dedicated to the concepts and collections of the Museum of the Avant-Garde.

On the pages of "Antiquarian" #135, the authors of the articles - art critics, collectors, museologists, artists - step by step trace the history of the avant-garde and the attitude towards it. They consider avant-garde art as a historical and cultural phenomenon that is not limited to the first third of the 20th century, but continues to this day as a continuous search process.

In particular, in this issue:

an interview with the curator of art projects Yury Komelkov and the general director of the Museum of Kyiv Diana Popova about how the collection of the Museum of the Avant-Garde is formed by the efforts of many people;
stories of art critics Andrii Sydorenko, Natalia Kryvda, Eduard Dymshyts, Maria Lutska about the history and evolution of the term "avant-garde" and the cultural phenomenon itself;
an article by art historian Dmytro Horbachev about how foreign art critics discovered and popularized the Ukrainian avant-garde through research and high-profile exhibitions;
the story of the curator of art projects Andrii Siguntsov about the avant-garde in world art — a historical excursion and possible directions for future development;
stories about individual works of art, gems of the avant-garde — the works of Oleksandr Bogomazov, Anatoly Petrytskyi, etc.;
reflections of modern artists — Oleksandr Dubovyk, Hleb Vysheslavskyi, Oleh Tistol, Tiberius Silvashi — about the avant-garde and about continuity in art;
the story of the art critic Diana Klochko about the mutual influence of the "classical avant-garde" and folk art, and the theater critic Hanna Veselovska about the avant-garde in theater art, etc.
As usual, the magazine has a lot of illustrations. This time - reproductions of works of art by artists associated with the avant-garde.

The guest editor of the issue is Yuriy Komelkov, curator of art projects, publisher, gallerist.
