Description

The collection opens with the story "The Sunset" (1947), which occupies a central place in the writer's creative output. Against the backdrop of the decline of the aristocratic family and the fading traditions of refined Japan, it tells the story of the wanderings of a representative of the metropolitan bohemia of the post-war period - a decadent and rebel, who actually yearns for love and peace of mind.

The collection also includes short prose from different periods of the writer's work, namely: the debut story "Train" (1933), the autobiographical essay "One Hundred Views of Fuji" (1938), the story "Fireworks" (1942) and the last work - "Cherry Blossoms" (1948). In these texts, which vary in genre and subject matter, an incorrigible romantic and skeptic, a seeker of truth and a disillusioned rebel, composes episodes of his life into unimaginative "everyday" plots, desperately trying to fit into the rhythm of contemporary Japanese society and understand its values. Focused on the author's inner world, the prose is full of (self)observations and surprisingly frank, deep and sometimes ironic reflections of the writer about empathy, trust, sincerity, loneliness, submission to fate and acceptance.
